Presidential candidate Luis Guillermo Solís took 77.88% of the votes in the second round of elections according to the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), which makes him the new president of Costa Rica.
TSE President, Luis Antonio Sobrado, revealed the first results in a session held two hours after the polls closed, but he did not officially declare Solis, a candidate of the Citizen Action Party (PAC), president-elect.
The figures show that Solis exceeded his goal of getting one million votes, equivalent to a third of the electoral roll of nearly 3.1 million registered voters.
The PAC candidate accumulated1,258,715 votes and became the first to exceed one million votes in the history of Costa Rica.
Solis, a historian of 53 years, began his campaign by saying he sought to end the “misrule” of the PLN in the last eight years by Óscar Arias (2006-2010) and Laura Chinchilla (2010 – 2014).
He has also promised a frontal fight against corruption and ending the extreme poverty that affects 6% of the population.
With this victory, the PAC, founded in 2000, has its first president-elect in the history of Costa Rica. (ACAN-EFE)
